Ah, Chicago--undisputed heavyweight of public servant corruption--you just can't seem to banish your thuggery ways. As evidence: Chicago Sun-Times has an item about a cop who flashed her badge and gun to get free coffee and pastries at six different Starbucks in the Lincoln Park and Lakeview neighborhoods.
Starbucks employees claim Officer Barbara Nevers intimidated them into giving up the freebies, with one of the managers testifying, "She was vehement about getting the free pastries. This woman is aggressive." Come on, you insensitive baristas with no method of self-defense save boiling water and whipped cream, did it ever occur to you that maybe she was simply hypoglycemic?
Five members of the Chicago Police Board found Nevers guilty of "retail theft, using her position for official gain, unnecessary display of a weapon, mistreatment of a person and other offenses" back in June, and voted to suspend her, with counseling, for 15 months. There were two dissenting members who held the opinion that Nevers should have received a stricter punishment. Stricter? For armed robbery and implied protection bribery? Too bad they didn't find a few stems and seeds of Mary Jane on her--she would have gotten 20 years for that alone. Or would she?
