Neighborhood Says "Hell No!" to Church's Chicken

Churchs_no Let me just say right up front that I am not anti-fried chicken--in fact, I love a good crispy leg or breast just as much as the next meat eater--but I also know that if I eat fried chicken frequently I'll balloon up like a greedy hawk let loose in a chicken coop. Now that that's been made clear, I'm delighted that residents of Milwaukee's less than affluent northwest side are campaigning against the addition of a proposed Church's Chicken to their neighborhood.

Last week, Journal Sentinel's Tom Daykin penned an excellent article about the campaign, which is spearheaded by Larry and Sharon Adams, founders of Walnut Way Conservation Corporation. Their organization works to create and maintain community gardens in the neighborhood as well as many other worthy projects, so they have a vested interest in seeing that any restaurants that open there offer healthier, higher quality food choices.

With a Gold Rush Chicken, Popeye's, Checker's and McDonald's all located between 6th and 27th Streets on North Avenue, the area hardly needs another saturated fat pusher. And, as the rates of obesity and other diet-related health problems are much higher in poor communities, it just makes sense to bring in businesses that can help steer the stats in a more positive direction.

So I hereby add my voice to the campaign with a hearty Hell No!
