RedLine Milwaukee is opening up its house at 1422 N. 4th Street for the first time this Saturday, February 14, from 10AM-noon. Co-founders Lori Bauman and Steve Vande Zande, along with staff and board members, will be on hand to welcome anyone who wants to learn more about what this new urban art incubator plans to offer artists and the larger community.
An affiliate of RedLine Denver, RedLine Milwaukee's mission is to bring emerging, mid-career and established artists of all disciplines together to work, learn and grow through its Artists in Residence Program, while simultaneously providing artistic educational opportunities to the public, primarily to area youth and teens.
The incubator will have studio spaces available to those accepted into the minimum two year Artists in Residence Program. For the community, RedLine Milwaukee will have an exhibition hall, a lending library, classroom space, a print shop, and a multipurpose space called the Red Room.
Though the building is under renovation, Bauman and Vande Zande believe that now is the right time to invite the masses in for a little preview. In a recent email, Bauman wrote, "We're just hoping to introduce ourselves to the community, let people know what we are, and how they can get involved." Sounds good.
Because no new project can start without at least a smattering of introductory words, Saturday's event will feature a few brief speeches by Bauman, Vande Zande and architect Bruce Wydeven, beginning just after 10AM. Building tours start around 10:30.
As an added bonus, some of the work created by five graffiti artists from TRUE Skool will be on display for your viewing pleasure. These are scheduled to be taken down when the real dust begins to fly and then reinstalled for the formal opening in July 2009, so if ya show up at the open house you can consider yourself a part of an elite crowd of folks who saw them first.
