The Wisconsin Arts Board (WAB) has put out a call for postcard entries from visual artists and poets to celebrate its 35th day o' birth. This is a rare submission opportunity as there's no fee, no jury to impress and you are absolutely free to create whatever you want. Huzzah! Of course, there's no prize money either, but what the hell, right?
Here's what ya do:
1. Come up with a work that expresses how you experience the power of art, or dig around your studio or desk for something you've already created.
2. Take a picture of your art or type/copy and paste your poem.
3. Print your work on a rectangular postcard of these dimensions: at least 3-1/2 inches high X 5 inches long X 0.007 inch thick, but no more than 4-1/4 inches high X 6 inches long X 0.016 inch thick.
4. Slap on a stamp and mail it to be received by July 1, 2009 to:
Happy 35th Birthday WAB
101 East Wilson Street, First Floor
Madison, WI 53702
5. You're done!
WAB does state that postcards, "may be sent in an envelope to protect the artwork if you prefer," but that's all kinds of lame. Having the postmark and seeing the grunge and sticky finger marks that accumulate right on the card is what makes it worth while. Whatever you do, don't be one of those annoying artists/writers that whines about how precious his/her work is, 'kay? It's a process, so love it, damn it!
All submitted postcards will be displayed in the WAB Gallery at DOA/Wisconsin Arts Board Lobby Exhibit Gallery, 101 E. Wilson Street in Madison, from July 27 to September 18, 2009. Selected postcards will also be posted on the WAB website.
You can download all the details here. Questions? Call WAB's Jeri Krohn at 608-266-0190.
