A long, long time ago Cricky took a course in the frightening, hormone-drenched universe known as high school that managed to expose me to the innate beauty of working with sharp objects, the occasional caustic chemical and super hot fire: Art Metal. While I haven't delved into metalworking since then, I often credit that course as ranking among those that successfully raised my visual arts learning curve, thereby aiding me in my lifelong journey to become a well-rounded artist.
Given these facts, I was extremely excited to receive a recent email from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts announcing the Department of Visual Art's Summer Metals Workshops. Upon confirming that the workshops are indeed open to everyone--even high schoolers!--at all skill levels, I just had to let out an ear-shattering Whoot! for all my neighbors to hear--yeah, they don't like it much but they're mighty used to it by now.
Beginning in mid-June and running through mid-July, the Summer Metals Workshops are scheduled to accommodate überbusy folks who wanna learn the arts of jewelry making and metalworking. Five weekend workshops, both Saturday and Sunday from 10AM-4PM, and four weeknight workshops, held Monday-Wednesday from 6-9PM, are available.
There are nine workshops total, ranging from Introduction To Jewelry: Silhouette Pendant to Welding & Metal Forming: Sculpture Or Vessel, and you can take all of the workshops, a couple or just one of 'em if ya like.
If you've been itchin' to get your hands on a nice piece of silver, some solder and a flaming torch--and who hasn't lately--these are the workshops for you!
Get details here and register online.
(Thanks, Polly!)
