Back in January of this year, the TRUE Skool and Motion Disorderz crews invaded the carefully ordered, streamlined Windhover Hall of the Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM) and ripped it up somethin' fierce. For tonight's MAM After Dark, both are returning for an encore performance of street art and new school breakdancing 'cause the teaching of all things Hip Hop to the uninitiated and/or clueless is never done.
TRUE Skool is nonprofit organization that works with youth from all walks of life through programs that integrate conflict resolution, creative self-expression, nonviolence, and community service projects. Over the years, it's garnered some very impressive support, including that of the Helen Bader Foundation. It's also made connections within the arts community. In just one example, five graffiti artists from TRUE Skool created some stellar works to be displayed at Redline Milwaukee, the local interdisciplinary arts incubator scheduled to open in July.
As devoted readers know, Cricky has been critical of MAM in the past--here and here--due to its lack of imagination and initiative when it comes to presenting exhibitions and events that speak to and about minorities in our fair city/county/state/country, but we may be witnessing the welcome beginnings of change as it appears to be getting the message that standing still in a world that continues to move forward can only end in a death most foul. I'm all about giving kudos when appropriate and due, so kudos to you MAM!
MAM After Dark is tonight, May 15, from 5PM to the witching hour. If you didn't buy an advance ticket, complete with the chance to get your lips around a free drink, you'll be asked to pony up a reasonable $10 at the door and whatever they've decided to overcharge ya for booze. But, hey, sometimes ya gotta make sacrifices and the presence of a sizable crowd will hopefully communicate to the museum's Powers That Be that they're headed in the oh so right direction.
(Thanks, Sarah!)
UPDATE: Word has come our way that No Name Crew, all the way from Bulgaria, will also be breakin'. Compare and contrast No Name with Motion Disorderz on YouTube. (Thanks, Jonas!)
