So you've invested all the time, effort and dough required to earn your degree in fine art or design and now you're out on your own, keeping active in your studio work while trying to pay off your staggering student loan debt. It's a tough go to get noticed by galleries, arts organizations and museums but ya keep right on pluggin' away because that's what you're made to do and, in actual fact, ya wouldn't want it any other way. Wouldn't it be nice, though, if your alma matter could give ya a bit of a leg up? Yes, it would, and Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) is gonna do just that with its new off-campus alumni exhibition series.
Tonight is the opening reception for Generate: An Exhibition of Work by MIAD Alumni, the very first of these school and alumni sponsored shows, and it's been curated by none other than former Armoury Gallery owner Cassandra Smith. Whoot! Smith herself graduated from MIAD in 2006 and the curatorial experience she's gained since then makes her the perfect candidate for the job.
Some 22 fine artists and designers will display their work at this exhibition, which means ya better rest up before heading over to the show 'cause viewing that much art on a tired brain means a whole lotta head explodin'. Works range from video to sculpture to printmaking to installations, representing a full load of creative endeavors.
Generate opens tonight, July 10, with a reception from 6-10PM at 2375 S. Howell Avenue on Miltown's South Side. A second reception is scheduled for Gallery Night, Friday July 24, from 5-10PM and the exhibition runs though July 29, 2009.
