Shortly after sunset on Saturday, July 11, dance film and video enthusiasts will gather in the parking lot outside Danceworks Studio Theatre, 1661 N. Water Street in Milwaukee, for the 3rd Annual ScreenDance event, emitting oohs and aahs as they witness five short films that utilize movement as the principal, er, mover of plot, story and/or theme.
Among the works on tap is local filmmaker Lauren Hafner Addison's Before Sunrise. Described in Danceworks' press release as "a mix of lucid dreaming, erotic fantasies, mundane rituals, self-judgment and fear of the unknown," it should be just the deep, artsy experience you need to get your Saturday night rollin' in a surreal direction, which we know is the hope of each and every one of y'all or ya wouldn't be reading this here bloggity blog.
Rounding out the night's screenings are Dance Like Your Old Man by Gideon Obarzanek and Edwina Throsby of Australia, Nora by Alla Kovgan and David Hinton of the USA and UK, Reincarnation by Takeshi Kushida of Japan, and Veiting Norba by Didzis Eglitis of Latvia--that's right, Latvia. All are presented through the Dance Film Association (DFA) touring program.
Also, video artist Dale Kaminski will create a work on the fly--a.k.a. instant video--syncing candid shots of the peeps in attendance with the keys on a piano--no rabbit ear poses, please.
Tickets are a scant $10 a pop and can be purchased by calling the Danceworks Box Office at 414-277-8480 ext. 6025, or you can take a risk by just showing up to see if they've still got lawn chair/blanket room for you and yours. The pictures start moving at 9:15PM.
(Thanks, Elyse!)
