Death is inevitable, yet no matter how deeply we understand and accept that fact it is still the most complex, most incomprehensible concept for us to wrap our noodles around. It is The Great Mystery we all must face and either have experienced or will experience secondhand through the loss of a dearly held loved one. And so it is that even the most practical and pragmatic among us who live through the pain of loss naturally wish we could communicate with our dead from time to time in hopes of receiving a small dose of comfort for ourselves and for them.
The annual Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) was born out of this inevitability and this desire for connection, serving as both a remembrance and a celebration of those who have gone before us. While there's never a guarantee that a beloved spirit will make its presence known, tapping you on the shoulder, saying, "Hey!! It's great to see you! I'd give ya hug but I left my corporeal body in my other pants," it does make for a cathartic good time.
This year, as for the past sixteen, Walker's Point Center for the Arts (WPCA) will be hosting Día de los Muertos at its digs, 911 W. National Avenue, and everyone is invited to take part in the festivities. It's come for the ofrendas (memorial altars) and stay for the face painting and sugar skulls!
The opening reception is tonight, Friday October 30, from 5-9PM, and the exhibition runs through November 24, 2009.
The dead are calling you collect this weekend and if ya don't pick up, well, somebody's gonna get a earful next year. Viven de largo los muertos!
