Last week Wednesday, WUWM's Lake Effect broadcast a stellar interview with Kate Kramer--Deputy Director of the Center for 21st Century Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, artist and art-is-a-business mantra leader. She's super smart, people, and a bit of a chuckle to boot, so I highly recommend you find yourself a comfy seat, turn down that distracting ADD, and give her your full attention.
Along side the practical topics covered during the tête–à–tête with Bonnie North, Kramer discusses the all too common tendency artsy types have to bolt headlong for the hills whenever they hear--or even think they will hear--anyone talk about art as an economic entity. This reaction is not only silly in the extreme, it's also potentially dangerous to one's art. To wit, I once knew a painter so terrified with the prospect of marketing himself, figuring out contracts and plowing through the tax maze that he gave off a piercing yelp, turned tail and ran straight through a temporary gallery wall, effectively destroying four of his works in his desperation to get away. Don't let that happen to you.
Kramer will be presenting a workshop entitled Business of Art 101 at the relatively new BYOstudio, 2246 S. Kinnickinnic Avenue, on Saturday, February 6, 2010. The fee is 75 smackers, but you should rightly consider it an investment in your career and a way to avoid panic-induced damages you would otherwise incur had you not attended.
