The final print issue of The Onion will hit the streets tomorrow, followed soon by the shutdown of the A.V. Club Milwaukee website. These are sad days indeed, kids, making the intermittent December sunshine seem even more harsh and cruel as it stabs at your bloodshot eyes and mocks your grief.
Over the past 20 years, the Milwaukee edition of The Onion has provided invaluable intel on local art and cultural going-ons, proving particularly strong in the area of music coverage, while also brightening our often dull lives with satirical fake news, equal-opportunity-offending opinion, and totally made-up stats and reader polls. And for those gifts, there are no non-digital substitutes.
For its part, A.V. Club Milwaukee has been much more than just an online listing of upcoming arts and entertainment events, assuming an important independent voice within the community under the captainship of Matt Wild. While his editorials maintained an Onion-esque humor, Wild rarely allowed it to overtake the content, sticking to the point--mainly--and keeping the critiques clear, which is the mark of a truly skilled writer.
Lest the past tense heaviness of the above paragraph lead you astray, let me assure you that Wild still lives and is writing for the A.V. Club National edition as well as continuing on with his co-hosting duties on WMSE 91.7FM's The Disclaimer. He is also available as a freelance writer, so contact him at SLP Mode now!
There have already been two farewell/see-ya-in-hell parties for The Onion/A.V. Club Milwaukee, but the best has been saved for last:
The Onion Final Edition Release Party
Thursday, December 12
533 East Center Street
8PM to Close
Admission is FREE
Come on down to shake your thang and the hands of the dedicated staff--Wild, Erin Frank and Josh Hoppert--though not necessarily at the same time. Last I heard, both Ms. Frank and Mr. Hoppert are also looking for work, so click on their links for more info on their respective mad skills.
Okay then, we'll either see ya tomorrow night or see ya in, well, you know where.
